Encounter (Winter Camp)

Dear Monadnock Family,

To state, “these are challenging times,” would be a massive understatement. Maybe you are like me where my heart carries such heavy burdens. I seem to relate to David in the Psalms in ways I never could have imagined. In the words of David, “Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself? Do not reject us forever. Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression? We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love.” (Psalm 44:23-26)

Our hearts grieve the impact of isolation, the loss of life, the evils of racism, the decay of order, the continued impact of COVID, and our inability to reopen here at camp. Although these times are challenging, we believe that the Gospel is something we need more than ever: to proclaim the good news in ways we have never done before.

We have several announcements to make as we navigate our way through this unprecedented time:

It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the cancellation of the Ascend Teen Summer Camp.As you may know, we previously made the decision to cancel our Ascend Week 1 at the end of July. At the time we remained hopeful that state regulations for summer camps would allow us to operate one week of camp this year. On Friday, June 5, the NH Governor released the state’s final guidelines for overnight summer camps. They were much more restrictive than the draft guidelines we had received weeks earlier. We also decided to survey all parents to gather some input as we spent the weekend praying about the decisions that needed to be made. We are truly thankful for the response which helped us arrive at this very difficult decision.

We are opening up our MOUNTAINSIDE Campground June 12 for daily and weekly use. This is very exciting news in that we have been unable to open up the campground for daily and weekly use in over 30 years.  Our campground, which we are calling MOUNTAINSIDE is a great way to enjoy Monadnock as a family. We are in the process of having online registrations to reserve a site at the campground along with COVID rules we will need to comply with which will be coming out later this week. The guidelines are always updating so please call or email us if you are interested but at this time, you will need to do a "stay at home" quarantine for 14 days.

We will be hosting CAMP BEST during the month of July. We are partnering with SAU-47 and Jaffrey-Rindge Rotary to provide 14 days of “day camp” experience for 50 local middle school students. We are thrilled about this alliance of organizations rallying around the needs of local youth and families.

Labor Day 2020 is still on the docket. We are already working on a Labor Day Weekend experience unlike any we have ever done. Our speaker will be Greg Dyson, a pastor and the current Vice President of Intercultural Relations at Taylor University.  We couldn't think of a more timely voice than Greg’s during this season of life.  Start making plans now to come with family and friends to camp.  We are hoping for relaxed COVID guidelines.  More information coming out on Labor Day in the following week on pricing and making reservations.

Our Fall 2020 Schedule As of right now, we are still planning on holding our Fall Women’s and Men’s Retreats as well as our Couples Retreat. We will be opening up registration in the near future. Here is our list of upcoming retreats, as well as their dates:

  • Labor Day Weekend: September 4th-7th
  • Women’s Retreat:
    September 18th-20th with Maggie Rowe
    September 25th-27th with Lisa Anderson

  • Men’s Retreat: November 13th-15th

  • Couple’s Retreat: December 4th-6th

Our financial outlook Each day and with each canceled program the path forward for us gets harder and harder.  Losing Ascend, even with the additions we have made to boost revenue, will be a total loss of about $300,000. We have applied for loans and grants to get through these difficult times, but with much of the future unknown, it is difficult to project a strong revenue model without going into further debt.  We are trying to avoid that at all possible. Please be praying for us as we navigate these difficult days

Although these are challenging times, our mission and desire to serve you and the church hasn’t changed. We are working very hard to explore other options and opportunities to provide you a place this summer, such as a “Bed and Breakfast” weekend program. We will be sending out regular emails and social media announcements about these efforts. Follow us on Facebook or Instagram or give us your email for all the latest news and updates.

I am reminded of the words of Christ, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Our hope is secure in Christ. He is able to provide everything we need for today and in the future.

In His Love,
Roy Baldwin and Staff
